Subject: [firstname]: Here's the key to improving self awareness

Hey [firstname]!

As I mentioned earlier, oftentimes the key to improving your emotional intelligence (EI) is improving your self awareness, and I'm going to give you some tips in today's installment.

Improving your self awareness means building up a picture of your strengths and weaknesses. Let's face it: Nobody's good at everything all the time!

So how can you improve your self awareness?

A good way to start is by keeping a journal. Just a few minutes at the end of each day spent jotting down your thoughts and reflections can lead to a higher degree of self awareness. When you read them back to yourself, it cements these thoughts in a different part of your brain.

Another way of improving your self awareness is knowing your values. We all have to make compromises in our lives. Most of the time these are small and don't amount to much in the greater scheme of things. At other times, though, we're asked to make big compromises – to do things that “go against the grain” (so to speak). Do you do them, or do you not?

A lot of that will depend on the values that are most important to you. These are the “red lines” that you absolutely, positively will NOT compromise on. Take some time to examine your own “code of ethics”. When you know what's important to you, you won't have to think twice about making a moral decision – you'll know exactly what you need to do, to do the right thing.

Last (but by no means least) improving your self awareness means holding yourself accountable. If you're the sort of person who tends to blame others when things go wrong, you need to stop RIGHT NOW. Make a commitment to admit to (and take ownership of) your mistakes. Be prepared to face the consequences whatever they may be.
